Priorat is a small but unique wine region located in the province of Tarragona at the foot of the Sierra del Montsant. The region is made up of towns and villages that were once under the rule of the Carthusian Monastery of Escalade. Its uniqueness lies in its climate, orography and geology. Torres’ internationally acclaimed wines owe much of their character to the region’s black llicorella slate soils. In the mid-1990s, Torres planted vineyards in Porrera and El Loar, where the winery was later to be built, and waited 10 years to start using some of the plots. Today, more than two decades after the first plantings, the vines are firmly established, each with its own special characteristics. To make Salmos, they chose the beautiful La Giberga vineyard, located in the municipality of Porrera.
This wine is a tribute to the monks of the courageous Carthusian order who arrived in the Priory in 1095, where they cultivated vineyards. In 1835, a riotous mob destroyed their life’s work and sacked the monastery, events that later culminated in an auction of church lands known as the „Desamortización de Mendizábal”. In 1996, the Torres family began work planting vineyards on the slopes dotted with the hard black „Liqueur“ schist.
